    Re: Stregth of scheduling

This whole scheduling thing is a crock IMO.
My feelings as well, I believe that winning against a decent team in your division does more than losing to a bigger team does. I understand the argument about playing better teams makes you better but in young kids like this winning gives a much more valuable morale boost.

They finished 44th last year and only had 1 regular-season game against the top 135.
Yeah, playing tougher teams make the good teams better, but it isn't necessary.
Which goes along with what i feel, state champ not runners up play a tougher schedule.

    Re: Stregth of scheduling

this goes along with the weaker opponent theory. a couple of seasons ago JJ Kelly was 5 and 0 adn Powell Valley was something like 3 and 2 or 2 and 2, either way Powell Valley had racked up losses to Richlands and whoever else. Powell Valley goes to a 5 and 0 Kelly who had beat up on thomas walker Rye cove Castlewood (i think it was Castlewood may have been St. Paul) and leaves with a 12 to 0 vicotry over a confedient Kelly team that just wasnt ready to play someone a little better. When you box it is true to spare light near a fight so youre fresh and confedient but in football if you play better teams then you become better, iron sharpens iron. Look at the SEC. they play the best college football around because they play the best teams year round. Bama LSU Arkansas South Carolina Georgia Florida Tenneessee Auburn Miss St. when you play quality opponents then it helps you to win against not so quality opponents like Oregon Texas Ohio St and so on. Same goes for High School. Had burton played a little tougher OOD scheduling i have no doubt they would have atleast one if not two rings this decade. they got the other ingredients, great kids, great program in the offseason, all they need is 2 to 3 quality opponents year in and year out like Radford or George Wythe (who they will face in the playoffs anyway so why not get to feel em out regular season)

    Re: Stregth of scheduling

Then why didn't PV bring a title home in the last 10 years if they played a tough out of dictrict schedule?

Here is my opinon. To build a program you have to have some dedicated kids. You start there. You get a good coach who knows how to use the talent he / she has. If you are not a good team you need to build the program. You play teams equal to you or less. You start winning. you win some more. more kids want to be part of a winner. you program improves. You beef you schedule up a bit because you have improved yourself. When you get to this point you are looking at playoffs. Don't matter who you are, even the SEC teams have doormats on their schueules.
This is the way Burton has build their program. I was there when we won 11 games over my 4 years playing. We would have 18 kids at the end of the season. couldn't even have full practice, not enough kids. coached holding dummies to make up a full 22 players practicing. Now we already play several Div 2 teams so what do we do? Do we go AA? Do we play schools that have tripple our students? isn't that what been the situation in the State Finals for how many years? The teams we have played (and Clintwood have played) would be division 2 schools or AA schools down here and the best of the best.
It would be like telling Union "Hey, you need to schedule a bunch of Div 4 or some AAA shcools." to get better.

I was gonna make a long reply about a dude earlier who contradicted himself/herself about a statement he/she thought they agreed with but it was opposite of what they were saying, but figured I would save my lungs and/or fingers because it probably wouldn't register.

I don't care who John I Burton Schedules, the Experience they would get from playing a NFL Team won't even keep them Close to Union. I said it before I think Burton's Schedule is on par with what the Little division guys should be playing, they are Cupcakes, and as such should play mostly other cup cakes. I know burton is a good D1 Team, but Basically now thats like being a tall midget.

Really????????????????????????????????? Guess you haven't watched much football around these parts in the past few years. Here are a few numbers for you to digest

Since 2005 Burton is 5-1 vs PV and 8-0 vs Appalachia (counting playoffs)
In those 6 games Burton outscored the mighty Vikings 144-72 and outscored the mighty Dawgs 347-80 in those 8 contest.

I fully expect the Burton/Union game to be a good one, the key will be the Burton passing attack as to how successful they will be in this game. But hey, guess I shouldn't go since you say the Raiders "won't keep it close"

because powell valley lacked the other key components that JIB has. Offseason training and Conditioning. After Barry Jones left in early 2000's Powell Valley's heart left with him. JIB has the heart and off season training and conditioning, all they need is to step up and play some tougher D1 schools such as George Wythe, Radford, and maybe some D2s like Gate city, and so on. Im not saying go schedule DB, Harlan, Bluefield and teams like that but someone better than casltwood eastside twinsprings ryecove. Up the comp and watch what happens. JIB will be better off in the long run. These arent games that burton should loose but games that would be alot closer and build more confedience on these wins instead of beating up weaker teams

    Re: Stregth of scheduling

I will chime in on is because teams like Burton and Clintwood have success these chickenshit coaches avoid them or drop them. We have had Honaker and Abingdon on the schedule and they drop us because they get out played out coached and beat. Lee and John Battle caled wanting to play us to see how they were to us, plus to test their kids. Why do we keep Rye Cove well their coach likes to be tested to see where his team is at and were their biggest home gate when we go there, plus you don't see our team redneck people or showboat.
Is their anything to gain by us playing Richlands, not at all except to get a key player hurt and the rest of our season goes in the tank, we have a choice not to play them it's not like having to play PV pre 2002 thats a district game and we always got a key player hurt that affected us the rest of the season. Look at Clintwood they didn't want to play Grayson or Hazard but like i said before none of these coaches wanted to play them and when the District loses two teams your grasping to find someone to play.
